European flight numbers hit all-time high

Thursday, 04 Sep, 2003 0

Commercial flights in Europe reached record levels over the last two months, according to data released by the European air traffic control agency Eurocontrol. The Financial Times quotes a report by the organisation, which states that the number of flights in Europe increased by 2.7% in August and 2.4% in July – to around 25,000 flights per day.

The newspaper says the increase can be partly attributed to carriers using smaller aircraft on some routes – and to the growth in so-called ‘no-frills’ carriers.

However, Eurocontrol goes on to state that while traffic appears to be on the increase, average fare levels are low, as carriers continue to sell discounted tickets in an effort to put ‘bums on seats’.
