Faith Monument celebrates 125 years

Thursday, 26 June 20143 min read

A host of special commemorative events are to take place at the end of next month in Plymouth, Mass., marking the 125th birthday of the Faith Monument.

Officially known as ‘the National Monument to the Forefathers,’ the town of Plymouth will host several events from Thursday, July 31, through Saturday August 2 including historic tours and seminars on the Pilgrims, film screenings, re-enactments, music and more.

Erected in 1889, the 81-feet high memorial is considered to be the world’s largest solid granite monument.

Plymouth’s Pilgrim Hall Museum, the Mayflower Society House and New Hope Chapel will all host art displays and workshops and the Friday evening will see a reenacted Pilgrim’s Progress through the town, a tradition which has taken place since 1921.

A major highlight will be a free screening of the 2011 movie ‘Monumental,’ which featured the Forefathers Monument, and will be introduced at Memorial Hall by co-producer Marshall Foster.

The three-day celebration finishes off with a Fun Run and a Forefathers Fun Day with arts, crafts, music and more Pilgrim Fathers and Civil War inspired reenactments.

Although most events are free, attendance to some is by advance registration only and can be booked online at www.plymrock.org
