ABOUT ROMAGNA:

Romagna has one of the most astonishing treasure chests of heritage, culture and hospitality in the world.

The World Heritage city of Ravenna itself, world famous for its mosaics, was three times capital of the Roman Empire and has no less than 8 UNESCO sites all around 1500 years old.

Within the borders of Romagna there is the ancient ceramic art city of Faenza, the historic salt-city seaside resort of Cervia, the delightful olive-oil hillside town of Brisighella, the lovely Venetian-influenced resort and fishing port of Cesenatico (surveyed by Leonardo da Vinci) and historic hillside vineyards including in wine-centres such as Bertinoro.

Major art cities include Roman Rimini (now also a glitzy resort) serene Cesena (where there is the oldest library in the world), Forli with incredibly eclectic architecture from the middle ages to Mussolini’s brutalist Art Deco, festival-city Santarcangelo, and the Sforza city of Imola  where Leonardo da Vinci worked for the Borgias.

The world’s oldest republic – San Marino, at the top of mount Titano – towers over the area – this extraordinary world heritage site, and fiercely independent state is walkable history.

Romagna has an incredible legacy of atmospheric medieval hill and mountaintop castles, and citadels – it is said over 300 – built by the Montefeltro, Sforza, Este and the Malatesta families – and by various Popes.

Romagna is arguably also the birthplace of Italian cuisine. It has arguably the best cookery school in Italy as part of an unique foundation started by a Romagnolo man – Pellegrino Artusi . Artusi is known to Italians all over the world as the father of Italian cookery.
