Fatal fall at Grand Canyon

Monday, 18 Mar, 2014 0

National Park Service officials are investigating the death of a tourist who fell 350 feet into the Grand Canyon.

The incident took place at the South Rim.

The National Park Service said it happened at the weekend and has officially identified the man as John N. Anderson, 53, of Grapevine, Texas, who was visiting with his family.

The Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report that a man had fallen at the rim near El Tovar Lodge but park rangers were unable to revive him with CPR.

The Grand Canyon has claimed the lives of over 600 visitors over the years, however fatal falls are relatively rare – with an average of just one every year.

More deaths are attributed to heat exhaustion during hiking or drownings on the Colorado River.

Grand Canyon National Park received 4.5 million visitors during 2013.
