Flying debate takes off
Academics and editors argue can sustainable tourism include flying?
A group of experts have debated the hot topic of flying and sustainable tourism at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).
Three highly acclaimed academics and an editor argued for and against the topic of Can Sustainable Tourism Include Flying?
Making the case for the yes argument was Valere Tjolle and Dr Davina Stanford.
Valere is Sustainable Tourism Editor for the world’s largest global online community for the Travel and Tourism Industry: TravelMole while Dr Stanford is a Writer, Researcher and Lecturer responsible for tourism at the International Centre for Research in Events, Tourism and Hospitality at Leeds Metropolitan University.
UCLan’s Professor Les Lumsdon and Paul Peeters pitched the no argument.
Professor Lumsdon is an Emeritus Professor of Tourism and author of numerous books and papers on Sustainable Tourism while Paul is a former Aeronautic Engineer and Associate Professor of Sustainable Tourism and Transport at NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences.
"This is probably the most important issue that the tourism industry needs to debate, particularly tourism managers of the future."
Professor Lumsdon commented: "This is probably the most important issue that the tourism industry needs to debate, particularly tourism managers of the future. It has a global reach and will impact on future generations and how we manage our planet."
The four debated ideas such as flying uses fossil fuels and creates climate change and climate change brings floods and other disasters to poorer areas. Other points raised included people need holidays in the sun, tourism brings wealth and development to poorer areas and spreading wealth is the only way to bring equity to the world.
The event was chaired by Professor Richard Sharpley, Professor of Tourism & Development at UCLan with interests in tourism, development and sustainability and author of numerous books and papers.
