George Lucas pulls museum project out of Chicago
The force is no longer with a project to build the landmark Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Chicago.
‘Star Wars’ creator George Lucas has abandoned plans for the highly anticipated museum on the Chicago waterfront due to a long running land dispute and lawsuit.
Chicago’s Friends of the Parks group had legally challenged the development and filed a lawsuit saying the plans violated laws limiting development along Lake Michigan.
The land in question is currently used as a parking lot for NFL stadium Soldier Field.
"No one benefits from continuing their seemingly unending litigation to protect a parking lot," Lucas said.
The movie mogul said in a statement he would instead build the museum in California but declined to give specifics.
In a statement mayor Rahm Emanuel called it a ‘missed opportunity’ that could have supported thousands of extra jobs and millions in tourism dollars.
"Unfortunately, time has run out and the moment we’ve consistently warned about has arrived – Chicago’s loss will be another city’s gain," Emanuel said.
City tourism marketing body Choose Chicago called it an ‘enormous loss.’
The federal lawsuit argued the city of Chicago had no authority to hand over land for the development based on a legal principle which ensures certain open spaces are accessible to the public.
