Two elderly tourists have been found dead in a remote area of Australia’s Northern Territory.
The couple from Germany were both in their 70s and hired a car from Alice Springs.
The car was spotted abandoned in Trephina Gorge on Sunday, which sparked a search operation.
Wilfred Thor’s body was found on Monday and the body of his 73-year old wife Giselle was discovered a day later.
"Northern Territory Police, Emergency Service and Parks and Wildlife Rangers mapped an area of more than 80sq kilometres and covered more than 50sq kiloetresm in the search of the missing tourists," said Sgt Phil Emmett.
"Unfortunately in this circumstance, the outcome has been tragic for the two missing persons and their families."
Emmett said the couple likely became lost not long after arriving at the gorge and for some reason went in different directions.
Cause of death has not yet been disclosed but police said there are no suspicious circumstances.
"I would like to convey my condolences (to the family). Such a sad end to a lifetime of endeavour and of planning to come and visit Australia," Emmet added.
