Hartlepool is the new Venice, or something

The north-eastern town of Hartlepool, often better known for its chemical works and high unemployment rates, has been highlighted as a “model tourist attraction”. The town has been singled out by the UK tourist authority Visit Britain as a place that has transformed itself into a “stunning destination”.

According to The Independent, the organisation’s chairman Sir Michael Lickiss said: “I was a bit surprised when I saw it but there are so many hidden jewels in the country. Many towns or cities were derelict or disused and they have been regenerated. Places such as Newcastle, Gateshead, Birmingham and Hartlepool, with its European-style waterfront cafes, are fantastic for short breaks.”

The ballet dancer Wayne Sleep, who was born in the town, told The Independent he was delighted that Hartlepool had been praised: “It is a great idea. Hartlepool has come along in leaps and bounds, and visiting the historic marina is well worth the effort. There is life beyond London.”

Indeed, Visit Britain is currently advising tourists they should sample other mini-break destinations including Hull, Derby, Bradford and Norwich, which is reportedly being described as “hot stuff”.

One councillor, however, pointed out to the newspaper that the picture could be sullied somewhat when a flotilla of nuclear “ghost ships” arrives in Hartlepool from the United States on 5 November.
