Hilton Times Square closing down indefinitely
The Hilton Times Square is closing down indefinitely, becoming one of New York City’s most prominent casualties in the hospitality industry due to the Covid-19 crisis.
In a filing with the New York State Department of Labor, the company in control of the hotel, Sunstone Hotel Investors Inc, said 200 jobs will be lost from October.
The company said it is not necessarily a permanent closure for the 478-room hotel.
However, the layoffs may be for longer than six months.
It hopes to return but a ‘definitive reopening date has not been determined or established and will be impacted by negotiations with our lender, as well as market conditions,’ it said.
The hotel closed in March and furloughed employees and Sunstone said recently that it hasn’t been making mortgage payments or paying ground rent on the property for several months.
It is currently in discussions with its lenders.
The Big Apple has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, especially in the early days of the outbreak.
The hotel industry relies heavily on business travel and overseas visitation, both of which have dried up.
