Hilton Worldwide confirms malware data breach

Wednesday, 25 November 20153 min read
Just days after Starwood Hotels came clean over a malware intrusion at 54 hotels, rival Hilton Worldwide has finally confirmed a similar data breach at some of its properties.
It acknowledges hackers accessed credit card information from some of its point of sale terminals at an unspecified number of hotels.
Details released by Hilton are scant despite the company investigating the data breach for the last two months.
In late September, cyber security guru Brian Krebs highlighted irregular card activity which was traced back to point of sale terminals at ‘a large number of franchise properties’ operated by Hilton.
Th malware attacks compromised PoS systems between November 18 and December 5 in 2014, and between April 21 and July 27 this year, Hilton said.
It says card numbers, security codes and cardholder names were accessed, but not home addresses or PIN codes.
The company said it has been working with third-party forensics specialists, card companies, and law enforcement during its two-month long ‘thorough investigation.’
Affected customers are entitled to one year of complimentary credit monitoring, said Jim Holthouser, Hilton’s executive vice president, global brands.
