HK, Macau, Guangdong in visa talks

Tuesday, 24 February 20093 min read

MACAU – Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong have agreed to set up a “cooperation and coordination mechanism”, and will promote tourism in the Pearl River Delta by “enhancing promotion of multi-destination itineraries”.

Destination Macau says Guangdong regional authorities will recommend to the central government that all residents of the province be allowed to apply for multiple-entry visas to both of the SARs, in the same way that Shenzhen residents are currently allowed to.

What this means, according to Destination Macau, is that growth in visitor numbers will go up by a few percentage points this year.

“But the fact that the three governments are aligning their marketing objectives is more important.

“The Pearl River Delta does indeed have much to offer international visitors as a single destination, and transport connections are already good enough to facilitate the growth of multi-destination itineraries for tourists.

“Giving Guangdong residents the option of multiple-entry visas to Macau and Hong Kong is a big step towards integrating the region’s tourism industry. “

Other positive news to emerge on the pan-delta front is that work is expected to begin by the end of this year on the Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai bridge.
