Hong Kong passengers first to arrive at Heathrow T5
LONDON: The first flight to be served by Heathrow airport’s new Terminal 5 in March next year will be a British Airways service from Hong Kong. The passengers arriving from the SAR will be the first of around 40,000 to go through the terminal on its first day of operation.
Before then, thousands of people will act as passengers to check out facilities and infrastructure at the £4.3 billion terminal.
The new terminal, home for British Airways, will serve around 30 million passengers a year.
Heathrow chief executive Tony Douglas said London needed a world-class airport to support its status as a world-class city.
Douglas said 68 million passengers would fly through Heathrow this year “in ageing terminal facilities designed to accommodate around 45 million”.
He added, “When T5 opens and 30 million passengers move out of existing terminals, for the first time we will have space to breathe in the central terminal area and have a once in a lifetime opportunity to redevelop the rest of the airport and bring it up to a comparable standard to T5.”
