Housekeepers get a ‘break’
A new law in Illinois requiring housekeepers to receive two, 15-minute paid breaks was put on hold when a judge issued a temporary restraining order.
“Hotel-industry officials want to scuttle the law, arguing the rest breaks will hurt productivity and profits and ultimately jeopardize the comfort customers are starting to expect,” wrote the Chicago Tribune.
The law was passed by the state legislature and signed by the governor. It applies only to housekeepers in Cook County.
The housekeepers union estimated the bill will impact about 5,000 workers in Chicago and suburban Cook County.
Lawmakers cited incidents of hotels slashing staff members and forcing housekeepers to clean more rooms.
Lawmakers also noted that hotels have been regularly adding amenities in the bathrooms and sitting rooms.
“Everyone has a breaking point,” said State Rep. John Fritchey.
