Many visitors to Chicagoland opt for a hotel in the suburbs because the hotels
are less expensive. Of course the Windy City has a lot to offer visitors, but there is a wide variety of worthwhile attractions for groups beyond its borders, so don’t just stay in the suburbs, see them.
Chicago Plus, a regional tourism promotion group comprised of 17 area CVBs, has developed a series of one-day itineraries exploring the suburbs. Let’s explore some of them.
Start with a drive north along Lake Michigan’s shoreline on Sheridan Road, passing through scenic glades and past impressive mansions. The first town north of Chicago is Evanston, home to Northwestern University. Further up is
the Baha’i House of Worship, the only one in North America. The temple is
surrounded with fabulous gardens. The Charles Dawes House is a French
chateaux and the home of the former Vice President to Calvin Coolidge. Grosse Point Lighthouse is a national landmark and one of the finest on the lake. The Cuneo Museum and Gardens is a historic Venetian-style home with European furnishings, art and tapestries and formal gardens.
Thirty miles west of the city, the Morton Arboretum in Lisle has an exceptional
collection of trees, gardens and lakes spread over its 1,700 acres. There are
14 miles of hiking trails, or take a guided tour on trams, trolleys or your own
coach. The arboretum is known for its fall foliage and summer wildflowers.
