‘Human error’ to blame for cruise ship sinking
Human error is reportedly to blame for the sinking of a Louis Cruise Lines ship off Santorini on Easter Friday.
The 22,412-tonne Sea Diamond with more than 1,500 passengers and crew hit a reef close to the island last Thursday and went down early the following morning (see previous TravelMole story). Two French passengers are still missing.
The shp was carrying 730 Americans, 112 Spaniards, 100 French and many other nationalities on board including Britons, Germans and Australians.
Now the cruise line’s operations department head Giorgos Koubanas has been quoted as saying: “There is most definitely human error”.
According to Reuters, he said: “While ships are nowadays technologically very advanced, the human factor can still cause accidents.”
He did not say whose mistake led to the ship sinking off the coast of the island.
“I do not know who gave the order for the ship to end up there,” he said, adding that the retrieval of the ship’s voyage data recorder would provide some answers.
