Iceland volcano erupts, shuts down Blue Lagoon
After weeks of activity a volcano has erupted in southwest Iceland putting air travel on alert.
The volcano has been rumbling with seismic activity for the past two months.
Thousands of residents were earlier evacuated from the nearby town of Grindavik.
It is not expected to bring the same level of disruption as in 2010 but travellers have been advised to check for flight updates in the coming days.
Volcanic clouds are visible from Reykjavik, which is about 42km away.
It has closed down the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa which had only just reopened.
The Civil Defence said the eruption happened pretty quickly and is ‘quite a large event.’
So far, there is no flight disruption, Iceland’s foreign minister, Bjarni Benediktsson posted on X.
“International flight corridors remain open”.
In 2010, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted producing huge clouds of ash, causing massive flight disruptions across Europe.
