IndiGo pilots grounded after almost landing plane on road

Sunday, 25 May, 2016 0

Indian carrier IndiGo has grounded two pilots who nearly landed a plane on a road after they mistook it for a runway.

The flight from Ahmedabad to Jaipur was close to touching down when they received a ‘too low terrain’ warning from air traffic control.

"The captain immediately carried out a go-around. The aircraft landed safely on a subsequent approach," the airline said of the incident in February which has only just been picked up by media.

The Hindustan Times reports an official said the plane was less than 300 metres from the ground and 90 seconds from touching down on the road which runs parallel to the airport.

The incident was fully disclosed to regulator Directorate-General of Civil Aviation, the airline said.

"Both pilots have been taken off flight duty pending investigation," an IndiGo statement said.
