Indy fulfils tourism impact
Organisers of this last weekend’s spectacualr Indy motor racing event have said that it is now Australia’s largest motorsport festival with over 312,000 attending over the four-days, slightly down on last year’s record of 316,459, with the Queensland event now bigger than the Formula One Grand Prix held in Melbourne, which attracts about 300,000.
Research being released next week will confirm that the attendance and the impact of the event, which has been in existence for 16 years, confirming the generation of in the region of $A70 million for the Queensland economy, making it the state’s most lucrative tourism event.
Queensland Premier Peter Beattie gave approval yesterday to Indy Chairman Terry Mackenroth to continue negotiations with the management of the Champ Car Series, securing their participation until 2013, with Mr Mackenroth saying that the Queensland Government was committed to investing $12 million a year into the event until 2013.
It is considered that the inclusion of a V8 Supercar round in the event has also been significant in this Queensland success story.
