JAL chairman to step down

Monday, 9 May 20053 min read

The Chairman of Japan Airlines (JAL), Isao Kaneko, is reportedly to step down at the end of this month following several safety lapses at the airline.

The carrier has been embroiled in several safety incidents in the last few weeks: in January a pilot reportedly tried to take off without getting clearance from air traffic control; a flight had to be rerouted this weekend after the planes altimeter failed; and, on Sunday, a flight from New York to Tokyo had to make an emergency landing after a sudden drop in air pressure.

According to the Japan Today website, the airline accepted Kaneko’s resignation today and he will leave his position on 31 May.
