JetBlue hinted it may equip some new jets it has ordered from Airbus for transatlantic travel.
During an earnings call the carrier announced some of the 30 new A321 jets may be deployed on European routes.
CEO Robin Hayes said transatlantic services ‘suffer from the same lack of competition and high fares’ as transcontinental flights within the US.
The Airbus order is worth about $3.6 billion at list prices.
Hayes said the order gives it the ‘potential to consider markets in Europe.’
To do that the jets require configuring with a different engine, more fuel tanks, and heavier landing gear, and the airline says it has until next year to decide if they will be used on transatlantic routes.
With the fleet expansion the New York based carried also touted further expected growth of its premium Mint service on US routes.
