JTB halts tours to Sri Lanka
Japanese travel group JTB Corp is suspending all tours to Sri Lanka for nearly two months at least.
No more tours will depart until at least June 16 following the Easter weekend bomb attacks.
The company cannot sufficiently secure customers’ safety, a JTB representative said.
Customers with bookings will receive a full refund, JTB said.
JTB still has customers currently in Sri Lanka who are due to return soon.
One Japanese citizen died in the terrorist attacks which saw a coordinated series of bombs across capital Colombo and elsewhere in the country, targeting churches and hotels.
Rival travel agency group H.I.S. Co said it will continue Sri Lanka tours having confirmed that flighta and hotels can accommodate clients, however customers wishing to cancel will have all charges waived for travel up to May 10.
Tourism to Sri Lanka from Japan has been steadily rising with 47,000 travellers visiting the country in 2017, according to data from the Japan National Tourism Organization.
