Kuoni announces store closures

Monday, 29 Sep, 2020 0

Kuoni is streamlining its nationwide store network following a strategic business review and recent staff consultation.

The company said the size of the store network has been under review in the company’s re-organisation plans.

Leases on a number of Kuoni’s high street stores are expiring soon and those stores will close, which include Lakeside, Bromley, Leeds, Windsor, Kingston, Stratford, Canterbury and Glasgow.

Kuoni said the London City store had already been transferred to another retailer earlier this year.

A slump in travel demand caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, evolving shopping behaviour and the growth of video apps to plan holidays online have all been factors.

Kuoni says the store rationalisation won’t result in job cuts.

"Our immediate plan is that all staff will remain with us working from home in our virtual call centre which is working well," said Derek Jones, CEO of Kuoni parent, DER Touristik UK.

"Needless to say we are still operating in a very uncertain trading environment, so we will continue to review our retail strategy with a view to making the Kuoni brand fit for the future."

Kuoni will have a phased re-opening of its 20 high street stores in the coming months.

On 3 November, Kuoni plans to re-open its concessions in John Lewis shops in Cardiff, Chelmsford, Reading and Southampton, as well as other stores at a later date.

However, seven Kuoni concessions in John Lewis shops in Newcastle, Oxford, Leeds, Cheadle, White City, Trafford, and Welwyn will not be re-opening.
