LA calls for fingerprint checks for Uber, Lyft drivers

Monday, 21 March 20163 min read
The city of Los Angeles is pushing for a fingerprinting program for all drivers of ridesharing services, to bring them in line with conventional taxi firms.
Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti and two City Council members have called on the the California Public Utilities Commission to pass the program.
The utilities commission regulates all ridesharing services.
"Keeping the riding public safe is something we should strive to do and requiring full and fair fingerprint background checks across the board will push us in that direction," councilman Paul Krekorian said in a press release.
The proposal would include the big two ride hailing apps Uber and Lyft, and also private limo and shuttle services like SuperShuttle.
Uber and Lyft both do their own background identity checks of drivers but this is based on social security data which is easier to falsify.
The program would also make companies explain the reasons behind a decision to deny employment based on a background check.
