Latest airline money-maker?

Wednesday, 16 July 20083 min read

If you thought US airlines had run out of ways to generate income, think again…..try boarding passes.

Five major US airlines have plans to start publishing ads on boarding passes that passengers print at home.

The ads will also have coupons, restaurant and shopping recommendations and lists of events. Information will be based on destinations and duration of stay, according to Sojern, a start up company.

The airlines are Delta, Northwest, US, United and Continental.

Passengers who want to save printer ink can still choose to print only the boarding pass.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity to monetize with targeted personal ads,” Duane Woerth, Sojern’s business development executive, told USA Today.

Airports are hoisting ads on electrical outlet stations and baggage carousel conveyor belts and the Transportation Security Administration has approved selling ads on the bins used at security checkpoints.
