Marriott commits to net-zero future
Marriott International has unveiled its strategy to become a net-zero emissions business.
It has submitted its emissions reduction targets to the Science Based Targets initiative, committing to reaching net-zero value chain greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by no later than 2050.
It officially signed up to the Race to Zero, a global campaign rallying companies, cities, regions, and institutions, to reach net-zero by 2050.
"This rigorous climate commitment to reach net-zero emissions is a needed step for us to do our part to help communities and environments," said Anthony Capuano, Chief Executive Officer, Marriott International.
"Even as we navigate one of the industry’s most difficult periods, we know this ambition will be a challenge."
Marriott hotels have been working to reduce their carbon footprint as part of Marriott’s existing 2025 sustainability goals.
Over time, initiatives may include increased use of renewable energy and the installation of automation systems and energy efficiency upgrades.
Guests will see enhanced focus on existing sustainability efforts such as solid waste and food waste reduction.
The company’s recent initiatives include the reduction of single-use plastics, replacing tiny, single-use toiletry bottles with larger pump-topped bottles, which will be fully implemented across the globe in 2022.
