Mauritius reaches herd immunity, eases restrictions

Sunday, 01 Sep, 2021 0

The Republic of Mauritius has reached its targeted vaccination rate, as the holiday island nation eases restrictions for international visitors.

The herd immunity threshold, which was calculated to be 60% of the population, was passed on 30 August.

Vaccinated travellers will now only be required to spend seven days in a ‘resort bubble’ hotel, down from 14 days.

From 1 October, Covid curbs are relaxed further, allowing visitors to explore Mauritius without restrictions from the moment they arrive as long as they submit a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before arrival.

The progress of Mauritius’ vaccination programme has been key to reopening Mauritius’ borders safely and securely, which began on 15 July.

Guests at resort bubble hotels can enjoy all leisure facilities available on the resort premises including swimming pools, restaurants, bars and gyms.

Nilen Vencadasmy, Chairman of Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, said: "MTPA is delighted and deeply proud that Mauritius has reached its vaccination target for herd immunity. This is a fantastic achievement by society and government."

"Mauritius’ vaccination programme has been fundamental to allowing the country to reopen to international travel, and to get tourism up and running again. The herd immunity milestone means that we can proceed to the final stage of our border reopening, when we will remove all quarantine restrictions for travellers."

Airline capacity from Europe and the Middle East is currently provided by Air Mauritius, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Air France, Kenya Airways and British Airways.
