20 per cent reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions cut by 15 per cent on Berlin’s Exhibition Grounds

Messe Berlin is the first trade fair company that is now able to provide its exhibitors with a certificate confirming its environmental properties. Independent experts have produced a report for the Berlin trade fair company, revealing its energy consumption, its various energy sources and its CO2 emissions from 2005 to 2009.

Rigorous energy management and selective investments during this period enabled the amount of fuel used for heating and cooling to be reduced by 19.7 per cent, accompanied by a 14.7 per cent cut in CO2 emissions. Messe Berlin met over 30 per cent of its electricity requirements by using the environmentally friendly combined heat and power system.

“In view of the growing demand for a more ecological approach in the staging of our events we want to be able to produce objective, easily understandable and tested figures to convince our exhibitors that Berlin is the right venue for trade fairs from an ecological standpoint too”, explains Raimund Hosch, Chief Executive Officer of Messe Berlin.

Messe Berlin can supply its exhibition organisers and exhibitors with this document free of charge. It contains quantified details about the environmental qualities of this internationally active company which is again expecting some 35,000 exhibiting companies and around 2.5 million visitors this year.
