Vacationers in Mexico are being warned resorts will likely be hit by a potentially ‘catastrophic’ hurricane later today.
Flights to Puerto Vallarta on Mexico’s Pacific Coast have been postponed as Hurricane Patricia is expected to make landfall this afternoon.
‘Life-threatening’ flash flooding and 40-feet waves have also been forecast for the now category 5 storm generating winds of up to 200 mph.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center called Patricia the ‘strongest hurricane ever on record’ in the Atlantic and eastern North Pacific Basins.
The U.S. Consulate General in Guadalajara gave a stark warning for Americans in the area to ‘make preparations immediately to protect life and property.’
A hurricane of similar intensity hit the same area in 1959, killing an estimated 1,800 people.
