Mexico cruise fee payable ‘once per sailing’
There maybe a little good news for cruise lines annoyed at the imposition of the $42 cruise fee payable per passenger when docking in Mexico.
CEO of the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association, Michele Paige says it will be a one-off payment per sailing.
That means guests would pay it only once, even if an itinerary involves more than one Mexico port call.
Paige said it would not be applied for every Mexico call during a cruise, according to comments made to SeaTrade Cruise News.
However, this hasn’t been confirmed by Mexico government officials yet.
Cruise industry leaders have been infuriated by the imposition of the fee and the potential of it being levied for every port call.
The fee has been pushed back six months and will come into force in July 2026.
The FCCA and cruise lines still want more talks ‘with ‘the right people’ the FCCA said.
There are as yet no concrete plans on how it will be collected.
“Our ask is for a meeting with the chief of staff or the president to be able to recognize the importance of Mexico and the cruise industry together,” Paige said.
“Mexico is not looking at the cruise industry as a true economic driver. There’s so much we could do,” Paige added.
The trade group says more than 10 million cruise guests are expected on cruises calling at Mexico ports in 2025.
The fee, it says, will financially hurt communities reliant on cruise tourism and could see cruise lines scale back Mexico cruise infrastructure projects.
