Mid-Atlantic Travel Tips

Delaware State Tourism officials just made group organizers’ jobs a little easier with the release of their 2007 Group Tour Planner. Resources listed include receptive operators, mileage charts and annual events throughout the state.
The guide provides information based on specific group interests and offers personal assistance in developing custom itineraries.

If your group is heading to Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay area this year, some fellow explorers may catch your eye—they’re the ones traveling by oar and sail aboard a 28-foot open boat. A crew embarks from Jamestown in May for a 121-day adventure retracing Captain John Smith’s 1608 Chesapeake expedition. Their voyage blazes the path for America’s new National Historic Water Trail, reminding millions of this important episode in American history.

The Captain John Smith Reenactment Voyage is just one of many events taking place in the region leading up to this year’s 400-year anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in Jamestown, Va.

Annapolis is also throwing a birthday party in 2008. Queen Anne of Great Britain granted the city charter in 1708, making it the only town in America ever chartered by the sovereign. To mark the city’s tricentennial, officials are planning a Queen Anne’s Ball, spring Charter Fest in the spring, concerts in
the summer, and a City Fair Week in the fall.

Attention group shoppers! With 16 shopping centers and 3.55 million square feet of retail space, Washington County is a browsers’ paradise. The Hagerstown-Washington County CVB website lists some shopping-focused itineraries like
the “Shop Til You Drop—Girlfriends Package,” offering an excursion to antique stores, an outlet mall, and a home-and-garden center. For those who like to mix retail with other experiences, check out the “Gateway to Western Maryland: Shops, Slots and Stops.”
