An escaped primate made a monkey out of airport workers at San Antonia.
It made a break for freedom after arriving in the cargo hold of an American Airlines flight from Chicago.
The Rhesus macaque, called Dawkins, managed to get loose after its crate was being moved.
It managed to evade capture from airport workers, first responders, police and animal welfare officers for an hour before being cornered in a room near a baggage handling area.
It was then ‘isolated’ with a tranquiliser.
Officials said there was no impact to flight operations although the airport did announce earlier flights could be delayed due to a ‘wildlife issue.’
Dawkins was being transported to a new home at Born Free USA, a local primate sanctuary.
"This is a Rhesus macaque in a situation that’s not normal. It’s not uncommon, but a reminder for us that when animals are in captivity, they can be unpredictable," said Born Free USA CEO Prashant Khetan.
