Motel 6 has agreed to pay $10 million in settlement over a class-action lawsuit accusing the company of passing on personal information of guests to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
As part of the settlement Motel 6 is required to conduct data privacy training and must not give out guest information to immigration authorities without a warrant or subpoena.
"Motel 6 fully recognizes the seriousness of the situation and accepts full responsibility for both compensating those who were harmed and taking the necessary steps to ensure that we protect the privacy of our guests," a company spokesman said in a statement.
The suit was filed by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund on behalf of guests.
It claimed workers at two properties routinely passed on information of guests with Latino sounding names to ICE officers.
That led to some being detained.
It has proved expensive for the company.
Motel 6 agreed to pay $12 million to settle a lawsuit filed by Washington state, alleging a similar practice at six properties.
