Mount Kinabalu to reopen in September

Monday, 29 June 20153 min read

Sabah’s tourism minister said Mount Kinabalu would be reopened in September but numbers allowed on the mountain at any one time will be severely restricted.

Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said it would reopen to the public in early September following an earthquake that claimed the lives of 18 people.

However he added that the maximum number of trekkers would be cut by half from 192 to about 90 to begin with.

"The safety of climbers is of utmost priority. We do not want to take a risk by maintaining the number as in the past," Masidi said.

Masidi also added that work was continuing to repair climbing routes and delays are occurring due to ongoing aftershocks.

"The aftershocks continue to occur and 91 aftershocks have been recorded so far," he said.

The 4,000 metre high peak has been closed since a magnitude 5.9 quake struck on June 5.
