MSC Cruises has now announced the new opening date for its delayed Ocean Cay Marine Reserve private island destination.
After cancelling calls from last weekend due to last-minute operational issues, MSC will now officially open it on December 5, 2019.
Until than cruises scheduled to call at the island will have an extra sea day or will be rerouted to alternative Caribbean destinations.
All passengers will be compensated.
On the first four canceled calls, guests were given a $100 credit and a discount for a future cruise.
In explaining the delay MSC said: "Despite Hurricane Dorian and the demobilization of 600 workers, the company took measures to remain on track and deliver the project on time. However, in the weeks that followed, further adverse weather conditions with strong winds and heavy swell caused several days of interruptions."
In addition the company experienced ‘last-minute issues with the leveling of the sand in certain areas of the island, the completion of the second breakwater and landscaping aspects.’
Ocean Cay will also have a Conservation Center and coral nursery which ‘will serve as an active base for coral education and research.’
MSC Ocean Cay Reserve is located in Bimini just 65 miles from Miami.
