Six working mothers have complained to the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Commission that Qantas has treated them unfairly, with the women, mainly employed at Brisbane airport, saying they were promised a four-day weekly roster after returning from maternity leave, but instead, they have been forced to work a five-day week, with their rosters often changed at the last minute.
The complaints were filed on the grounds of family responsibilities and name a specific manager at the airport but complainants Union, the ASU has not revealed the person’s name.
The ASU says that it had not had a response from Qantas with the ASU saying that the company does not appear to be interested in investigating the claims, let alone dealing with them”, and “It does appear that the company is paying a lot of lip service to the concept of being a family-friendly employer, but if people are leaving because they cannot balance work and family responsibilities, then that cannot be the case”.
The matter will be investigated by the Commission with a view to conciliation, but if not resolved, the ASU said that they would seek compensation or damages from Qantas for the women.
