Vietnam Airlines has named Duong Tri Thanh as president and chief executive, replacing Pham Ngoc Minh, who has now assumed the role of chairman.
A veteran of more than 25 years with the flag carrier, Thanh is also chairman of low cost unit Jetstar Pacific.
He led the restructuring of Jetstar into a newly profitable business for the first time.
"I am honoured to have been appointed as president and chief executive, and privileged to take responsibility for leading Vietnam Airlines towards its goal of becoming one of the leading global airlines in Asia," Thanh said.
"Together with the ministry of transport, Vietnam Airlines’ general assembly of shareholders and the airline’s management board, I have set specific targets for the period 2016-2020, with particular focus on three key objectives: safety, quality and efficiency."
"I am also looking forward to building on the strategic partnership with our new foreign shareholder ANA Holdings."
Japan carrier All Nippon recently completed the purchase of a stake in Vietnam Airlines.
The Vietnam government said it is open to offering additional shareholdings in VN for the right strategic partners.
