New York hoteliers reveal slump details
New York hoteliers have reported bookings down 12% from the UK in the past year.
Business from other parts of Europe is far worse – with bookings from France and Germany down as much as 40%.
The hoteliers gloomily predicted the tourist industry will take until 2004 to recover – provided there is no outbreak of war in the Middle East or other global conflicts.
Marriott executives said city-wide rates in New York remain suppressed, at least 15% down for this time of year, with average prices $20 lower than normal.
Marriott’s New York sales director Daren Kingi said: “The leisure sector has seen some deep discounting but the business market still needs time for recovery due to company travel policies and the economic situation in the US.”
In 2003, Kingi said Marriott would focus heavily on rebuilding its corporate traffic.
“Conservatively, we are looking at 2004 as the year of full recovery for New York,” he said.
