A New York lawmaker has proposed legislation requiring all travel agents to register with the New York Department of State in an effort to weed out unscrupulous agents.
State Sen. Jose Peralta’s bill requires an annual fee of $100 from all agencies.
Agents who register will be added to a public database for travelers to access.
"It’s all about protecting consumers, and protecting good travel agents," Peralta said.
"The DOS will have the power to revoke, suspend or impose a fine of up to $1,000 if the applicant has, among other things, defrauded consumers."
The scheme will not replace current legislation but will simply offer additional protections for consumers.
"This piece of legislation provides a more proactive role for consumers," he added.
