Norwegian Air pilot strike ends

Wednesday, 11 March 20153 min read

Norwegian Air has announced that its pilot strike is over after an 11-day conflict.

The airline said it ‘was difficult to anticipate what flights we may be able to operate’ but added that it was working as hard as possible to get back to normal services.

Under the agreed deal, pilots get a three-year employment guarantee, while agreeing to changes in insurance programmes and more flexible working hours, reports Associated Press.

But it was not in time to prevent a further 95 flights cancellations today, amounting to 27% of its services according to flight tracking website, Flight Aware.

However, yesterday 179 Norwegian Air flights were cancelled and 10 delayed.

A statement on the airline’s website said: “The strike amongst the Scandinavian pilots at Norwegian is now over. Norwegian has gone to great lengths to achieve a solution to the conflict that has lasted 11 days.

“Please keep a close eye on our flight status page for updated information.”

The strike, which had entered its second week, followed a breakdown in talks with the Norwegian Pilot Union Parat.

Pilots want a collective labour agreement with parent Norwegian Air Shuttle, instead of its local subsidiary Norwegian Air Norway, with the same terms across the region.

It came as reports emerged at the weekend that Norwegian’s parent, Norwegian Air Shuttle, is about to set up a UK subsidiary.
