Norwegian Air International has confirmed Providence Airport as its second East Coast base for new transatlantic flights.
Providence was in the running for Norwegian’s New England base against Hartford, Connecticut, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
The airline had already confirmed Stewart International in Newburgh, New York as its first base for new Boeing 737 MAX flights.
Norwegian CEO Bjorn Kjos hinted Providence was the preferred choice to the Seattle Times last week, a decision confirmed by the carrier to USA TODAY.
Both of the small Northeast airports will house pilots for its new Boeing 737 MAX services.
It takes delivery of its first 737 MAX jets later this year.
NAI’s decision comes just a couple of days before US airlines executives are scheduled to meet with President Trump.
NAI’s contentious air permit – which was finally approved by the Obama Administration – will undoubtedly be on the agenda.
The NAI subsidiary is Dublin based, which US airline leaders maintain was chosen purely to get around stricter labour laws in its home country.
