Officials tackle shark attacks after surfer bitten in half

Tuesday, 17 July 20123 min read

Western Australian officials are taking steps to stop the number of shark attacks following a surfer being bitten in half at the weekend.

State beaches were closed after 24-year old surfer Ben Linden was killed by a great white shark near Wedge Island, 160km north of Perth.

He is the latest victim of a great white shark attack. It is the fifth death in Western Australian waters within a year.

Helicopter surveillance patrols have been increased along Perth beaches and Rottnest Island, with additional services soon to begin in the south-west.

£9million has now been allocated to reduce the risk of attacks along Western Australia’s coastline, reports the Daily Mail, which draws tens of thousands of tourists every year.

The money will be used to fund increased shark safety awareness and research into shark activity in the region.
