Olympic city’s hotel crisis
BEIJING – Booking a hotel in Beijing during the Olympic Games is causing problems a year out from the event, according to China Hospitality News.
With most of the signed Olympic Hotels booked by international organisations, it is difficult for ordinary tourists to book a room at an Olympic Games appointed hotel.
At the beginning of this year, Beijing Olympic Games Organising Committee signed with 113 star-grade hotels and 253 non-star grade hotels in Beijing to provide accommodation for next year’s Games.
The majority of the rooms at these hotels were quickly booked despite the higher price levels, a representative from one of the signed hotels told CHN.
Up to 70% of the 113 star-grade hotels will be used to receive Olympic officials, government officials, sponsors and referees and the remaining 30% will be available to individual bookers.
Despite the limited supply of Olympic hotels, individual tourists can choose to stay at serviced apartments or rent a house from Beijing citizens, many of whom have already realised a big opportunity to make money.
For the price of the signed Olympic Hotels, BOGOC has limited the upper level of the price to RMB2960 (US$388) for a standard room at a five-star hotel, RMB2320 (US$304) for a room at a four-star hotel, and RMB1600 (US$209) for a room at a three-star hotel.
All non-signed hotels and inns can decide their own prices.
