Native Hawaiians sometimes consider sharks to be sacred. But a fear-based anti-shark campaign is leading to shark slaughter for their fins.
“Hawaii sharks are sacred to Hawaiians – unless you want to capture them, cut the fins off live animals and then dump them into the pristine waters surrounding Hawaii,” complains travel.dive.com.
The site calls recent anti-shark campaigns as “regurgitating spoon fed” fears of human attacks and “completely inane talking points” for politicians.
Legal loopholes allow the sharks to be killed in Hawaii with the cut-off fins sold in Asia. These have been good for shark fishermen but not for the state’s tourism efforts, says the site.
“The loopholes in that business are making a few non-native residents a killing these days… for as long as the sharks last that is, says travel.dive.com
