P&O Cruises Australia will become the first cruise line to build a new ship dedicated to the Australia market.
Parent company Carnival Corp has agreed a deal with shipbuilder Fincantieri to build a total of four new cruise ships for its global fleet.
The 135,500-tonne P&O ship will also be the largest ever based in Australia, carrying more than 4,200 guests.
"P&O Cruises is the modern face of Australian cruising and, with such a proud heritage of leadership, it is a natural step to announce that the line will take delivery of its first newbuild ship," said new president of P&O Australia Sture Myrmell.
The new ship will feature 2,100 guest rooms and sail itineraries from three to 10 days when it launches in 2019.
Part of the agreement also includes two large ships for Carnival’s Costa Asia unit specifically for the China market.
