Port shuts down after airplane crash
One impact of the fatal Chalks Ocean Airways crash in Miami: the local port was shut down briefly.
Officials shut down Miami’s Government Cut channel used for cruise ships to access the port, leaving nearly 10,000 passengers on three cruise ships having to remain in Miami for a day or so.
The city’s main port serves Carnival Cruise Lines’ Imagination and Fascination, as well as Royal Caribbean’s Majesty.
The Chalk’s airplane leaving Miami’s Watson Island was on its way to Bimini in the Bahamas when it crashed and killed everyone on board, or 20 people.
Early reports say a wing that fell off the 58-year-old plane had cracks that had probably gone unseen for a long time, according to federal investigators.
The crashed airplane was a Grumman Mallard G-73 built in 1947 and retrofitted in the mid 1980s, according to wire service reports.
Many of the people killed in the crash were residents of Bimini on their way to Christmas shopping in Miami.
“Christmas will not be the same for years,” said Bishop Duane Swiley, a Miami pastor who met with families.
