Powerful earthquake strikes Athens

The Greek capital of Athens was struck by a powerful earthquake on Friday.

According to reports, people ran from buildings into the streets when the earthquake hit.

It was 5.1 magnitude with its epicentre about 14 miles from the city.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage, but power cuts left people trapped in elevators.

The European Earthquake Monitoring Centre said the quake was ‘strong but fortunately not very long’.

It is the first time an earthquake has hit Athens since 1999.

The UK Foreign Office advised anyone in the region to follow the advice of local authorities and to check the website of the Greek General Secretariat for Civil Protection.
