Qantas posts third consecutive pandemic loss

Qantas’ pandemic induced losses continued, with its third straight billion-dollar annual deficit.

The pre-tax loss widened to AUD1.86bn. The pandemic has now cost the airline nearly AUD7bn in combined losses.

“These figures are staggering and getting through to the other side has obviously been tough,” said CEO Alan Joyce.

Joyce said the ‘existential crisis’ of the pandemic is now over.

“We always knew travel demand would recover strongly but the speed and scale of that recovery has been exceptional,” he added.

While domestic has fully recovered, international traffic is still below half of pre-pandemic levels.
