BRISBANE – Queensland has launched an eco-tourism plan to encourage visitors to Queensland’s protected areas.
The Queensland state government will be seeking out private investors to establish eco-tourism accommodation at seven destinations: Eurong on Fraser Island, Wallaman Falls at Girringun, Ninny Rise at Mission Beach, Jonah Bay at Whitsunday, Mount Mee at D’Aguilar National Park, Green Mountain Lamington National Park and Cowan South on Moreton Island.
Queensland Climate Change minister, Kate Jones, said that yearly income acquired from leasing facilities to private operators would be re-invested into national parks to facilitate conservation.
Lorraine Duffy, the Hotel Motel and Accommodation Association’s chief executive, said, “With some 222,000 Queenslanders relying on tourism for employment, a reinvestment in the sustainability of the state’s iconic national parks will only further enhance the significance that tourism brings to the Queensland economy.”
