Thursday, 04 Jan, 2006 0

New routes, a new base in Birmingham and an expanded fleet all helped Monarch Scheduled achieve record passenger numbers in 2005, the carrier has said.

Figures released by the airline show it carried 2.6 million passenger last year, a 37% increase on 2004.

The carryings were bolstered by new routes including Gatwick to Lisbon and Grenada, Manchester to Almeria, Birmingham to Alicante, Faro, Malaga and Tenerife and Blackpool, Aberdeen and Newquay to Malaga.

The year also saw the addition of three Airbus A320 and a Boeing 767.

Meanwhile, traffic figures in December increased 18% to almost 149,000 with visits to its website up 68.2%.

Further growth is forecast in 2006 with more new routes from Birmingham, Luton and Manchester.
