Rex ties up deal with Burnie
Regional Express will fly up to five services daily between Burnie and Melbourne under an historic partnership agreement.
Under the agreement with Burnie City Council and Burnie Airport Corporation, Rex will provide an additional aircraft and crew resources on the route, to take the frequency of services up to five and potentially more services per day.
As part of this arrangement, each party will co-invest to promote the services. The airport operators will reduce passenger charges and provide a rental holiday for use of the new airport terminal, while Burnie City Council will provide assistance in sales and marketing activities.
The arrangement aims to retain fares at the $105 entry level on the route.
Rex Managing Director Geoff Breust said the new schedule for the service, to come into effect on October 9, would provide a total of 116,000 seats per annum between Burnie and Melbourne.
That figure was 23,000 higher than when Qantaslink also operated on the route, he said.
“With the partnership and flight arrangements now secured, it is up to the community to get on board the service and use it as much as possible,” Mr Breust said.
